History of the festival

The Wellington Food Town Festival has recently celebrated it’s tenth anniversary and has been the most obvious output of the Wellington Food Town initiative. The festival has developed from small beginnings, through a variety of locations and dates before settling in the town centre on the first Saturday in September.

With the support of many volunteers and local community organisations the small Food Town Committee has built the festival to become a highlight of the Wellington calendar attracting thousands of residents and visitors to sample the wonderful produce provided by stallholders from all over the South West.

In 2016 the committee decided that they felt that they had taken the food town concept as far as they could and had therefore decided to stand down to allow a new team with fresh ideas to take it on to the next level.

The committee appointed Beverley and Sarah Milner Simonds, who took over the running of the event in spring 2016.

Beverley and Sarah had run the demo kitchen at the ‘14 & ‘15 festivals and are the driving force behind the awarding winning Eat: Festivals. Their other events have a very similar ethos and feel as Wellington.
The pair aim to focus the event on food and drink; introducing a cookery school, food talks, building the demo stage and seeking out more traders through the bursary scheme.

The food festival will continue on the first Saturday of September.
